I Was Just Thinking....

I tell you what, there is a HUGE groundswell of folks yearning for a simpler way of doing things. I hear from them all of the time.

"Getting simpler" doesn't mean not to be well read, but it does mean getting in touch with some primal stuff.  It does mean that having a squat rack in your basement and eating meat and hunting and spending time OUTSIDE with your kids or building a fire is fine and a natural way of doing things.

I was at Whole Foods the other day and a guy was telling the clerk the reason that he was buying multiple pounds of meat was that he was on the "Caveman Diet." She was like, "Huh?" with her "Save the Cows" and "Meat is Murder" buttons on her chest (Made up the part about the buttons).  I was swelling with pride. He was about 137 pounds soaking wet, but he was trying.

My assistant Tracy just told me that she went to a gym with her sister where you put a key in a machine and it gives you your workout.  A key. Really? I  am amazed but not suprised. People are that helpless? Yes, they are, dear reader. Do you really want that in your life? Or is it better to be more self reliant and self sufficient to do a training session on your own? It's not that hard, and you should know it is not that hard, whether you are a 63 year old female Rabbi (I train one who squats, deadlifts, presses, snatches and doesn't go near a machine, ever), or a 16 year old high school kid just trying to gain some muscle and get stronger.

The ideal gym would be one where the sign outside reads: "Come inside and see the latest and greatest invention in fitness! Guaranteed to revolutionize the industry! Guaranteed to work your CORE! Guaranteed to make you TONED! Burn fat, build muscle!"

Folks would be curious as hell, but the gym would  have tinted windows so you couldn't see inside. And then when you open the door, there are a single pair of squat stands in the middle of the room and a heavy bag in the corner swinging slightly. And 1000 pounds of weights.  And a boom box in the corner with a crooked antenna that only plays Cobalt and Pantera(GSTK) and 16 and Reign in Blood over and over.

All About Being a Lifer

What's a Lifer? Someone who isn't in to something for just a day, a month, a year...it's for life. Whether its training or your family or your job...it doesn't matter. You work at it, you build on it, you see the big picture . You don't miss workouts because it means something to you. You are like a Shakespearean actor- no matter what is going on in your life, you block it out when it's time to train. You walk into the weight room and all else disappears. Worry about it later.
